How to Roll Sushi with Bamboo Mat

Sushi is a beloved Japanese dish enjoyed by many worldwide. While it's often associated with restaurant dining, making sushi at home can be a rewarding and fun experience.

In this article, we will guide you through the process of rolling sushi using a bamboo mat, also known as a makisu. Whether you're a sushi enthusiast or a first-timer, our step-by-step instructions will help you create delicious sushi rolls right in your kitchen.

How to Roll Sushi with Bamboo Mat

Gather Your Supplies

Before you begin rolling sushi, make sure you have all the necessary supplies. These include:

  • cutting board,
  • clean damp towel,
  • bowl of cold water,
  • nori (dried seaweed sheets),
  • sushi rice,
  • various fillings like fish, vegetables, and sauces, and,
  • most importantly, a bamboo mat (makisu) for rolling.

Preparing the Bamboo Mat

To prevent the rice from sticking to the bamboo mat, wrap it in plastic wrap. Ensure the plastic wrap's width is wider than the mat.

Lay the mat vertically with the bamboo sticks facing upward, and wrap the mat tightly with the plastic wrap, cutting off any excess.

Create some slits in the plastic wrap to release air, helping to prevent air bubbles while rolling.

Basic Hosomaki (Tuna Roll)

Lay a sheet of nori on the bamboo mat with the rough side facing up. Dip your hands in cold water to prevent the rice from sticking.

Place a ball of sushi rice on the nori and spread it evenly, leaving about an inch of space at the top and half an inch at the bottom.

Add your desired filling, such as tuna, in the middle of the rice.

Roll the bamboo mat, tucking the bottom edge of the nori over the filling. Continue rolling and shaping the sushi until you have a tight, even roll.

Cutting the Sushi

Once your sushi roll is complete, use a sharp, wet knife to cut it into pieces. For traditional hosomaki rolls, cut the roll into six pieces.

Importanatly, Wipe the knife after each cut to maintain a clean blade, ensuring smooth slices.

How to Cook Sushi Rice

Uramaki (Salmon Avocado Roll)

For uramaki, also known as inside-out rolls, start with the rice side of the nori facing up. Place a generous amount of rice on the nori, almost double what you used for hosomaki.

Flip it over so the nori faces up and add your desired fillings, such as salmon and avocado. Roll the sushi, ensuring a tight seal at the end.

Tatemaki (Shrimp Tempura Roll)

Tatemaki rolls are thicker and rolled vertically. Sprinkle sesame seeds on the rice before adding your ingredients, such as shrimp tempura, imitation crab, cucumber, and jalapenos.

Roll the sushi tightly, and then cut it into five pieces.

Temaki (Unagi Hand Roll)

Temaki rolls are hand rolls that don't require a bamboo mat. Place the nori in your non-dominant hand, and add rice and your preferred fillings diagonally.

Fold the nori over the ingredients, shaping it into a cone. Use a bit of rice as glue to seal the roll.

Summary (How to Roll Sushi with Bamboo Mat)

Rolling sushi with a bamboo mat can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. With the right tools and ingredients, you can create a variety of delicious sushi rolls at home.

From basic hosomaki to more elaborate uramaki and temaki, you can customise your sushi with your favorite fillings and sauces.

Remember to keep your knife clean and wet for smooth, clean cuts, and don't forget to get creative with your plating. Enjoy the process, and savor your homemade sushi creations!

Biodegradable Water Balloons: Eco-Friendly Fun for Responsible Splashers

Water balloon fights are a classic summertime activity enjoyed by people of all ages. However, concerns about the environmental impact of traditional latex balloons have prompted the development of biodegradable alternatives.

In this article, we will explore the concept of biodegradable water balloons and shed light on popular products such as Bunch O Balloons.

Biodegradable Water Balloons: Eco-Friendly Fun for Responsible Splashers

Are Water Balloons Biodegradable?

Water balloons, in their traditional form, are made from latex, a natural rubber material derived from the sap of rubber trees.

Unfortunately, latex balloons are not biodegradable. When released into the environment, they can take several years to decompose fully. The remnants can be harmful to wildlife and contribute to pollution.

Introducing Biodegradable Water Balloons

In response to growing environmental concerns, manufacturers have introduced biodegradable water balloons as a sustainable alternative.

These eco-friendly balloons are typically made from natural materials such as natural rubber latex or plant-based polymers.

Bunch O Balloons: Convenience Meets Sustainability:

One popular brand of biodegradable water balloons is Bunch O Balloons. Bunch O Balloons offers an innovative solution to fill and tie multiple water balloons simultaneously, allowing for quick and hassle-free water balloon preparation. The product is designed to minimize water wastage and reduce cleanup time, making it a popular choice for large-scale water balloon battles.

Are Bunch O Balloons Biodegradable?

Not all Bunch O Balloons are biodegradable, but the latest ones are.  Some companies are committed to sustainability, and their balloons are biodegradable.

The balloons are made from a biodegradable material that breaks down naturally over time, reducing their impact on the environment.

When properly disposed of, they pose minimal harm to wildlife and ecosystems.

Are Bunch O Balloons Biodegradable

How to Use Biodegradable Water Balloons

Using biodegradable water balloons is similar to using traditional latex balloons. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  • Step 1: Purchase biodegradable water balloons, such as Bunch O Balloons, from a reputable retailer.
  • Step 2: Fill a large bucket or container with water.
  • Step 3: Attach the provided hose adapter or connector to your garden hose.
  • Step 4: Connect the filler hose to the balloon stem, following the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Step 5: Turn on the water supply and watch as the balloons fill up simultaneously.
  • Step 6: Once the balloons are filled, they will automatically seal themselves. Gently remove them from the stem, and they are ready for use!

Best Practices for Responsible Water Balloon Fun

While using biodegradable water balloons helps minimize environmental impact, it's essential to practice responsible water balloon fun.

Here are some tips to consider:

  • a) Choose appropriate battle locations: Opt for open areas away from delicate ecosystems, bodies of water, or areas with excessive litter.
  • b) Clean up after the fun: Encourage participants to collect and dispose of any balloon fragments properly.
  • c) Avoid overfilling balloons: Overfilled balloons are more likely to burst upon impact, leaving behind debris.
  • d) Consider alternative water activities: Explore other water games or engage in water conservation initiatives to promote responsible enjoyment.

Biodegradable Water Balloons

Biodegradable water balloons provide a sustainable solution for water balloon enthusiasts while minimizing harm to the environment.

Products like Bunch O Balloons offer convenience, speed, and eco-friendliness, making them a popular choice.

Remember to use these balloons responsibly, follow best practices, and always dispose of them properly. Let's enjoy water balloon fun while preserving our planet for future generations.

IN THE NEWS: Bamboo Packaging Great Food Storage Alternative

As plastic food packaging becomes increasingly pervasive, so does the growing concern about its negative environmental impact. Plastic packaging may be cost-effective and easy to produce, but let's face it, plastic pollution is one of the world's "most pressing environmental issues," harming oceans, animals, and drinking water for humans, according to National Geographic.

And that's not to mention plastic leaching, which also poses a threat to consumers' health.

Bamboo Packaging Great Food Storage Alternative

Bamboo Packaging Great Food Storage Alternative

"Plastic packaging is diverse and made of multiple polymers and numerous additives, along with other components, such as adhesives or coatings,"  and it also carries  "substances used during manufacturing," reads a report in the National Library of Medicine.
Imagine all that and more subtly melting into your food when you reheat leftovers in a plastic container. Pretty gross. Alas, plastic is literally everywhere, so while not completely avoidable, there are better options out there to help minimize the damage.

More and more companies, like Planters and Whole Foods, are pushing for better, more eco-friendly alternatives for their packaging needs and striving to eliminate heavy plastic usage in favour of sustainability.

Bamboo is one such alternative that has certainly caught the attention of the food industry in recent years.

Using this ultra-durable, easily renewable material as a means to store your food comes with lots of great benefits that might have you considering making a few changes to your kitchenware.

Bamboo is durable, heat-resistant, and renewable

Why utilize bamboo as food packaging instead of plastic? For starters, this giant member of the grass family is naturally antibacterial and biodegradable, as opposed to its toxic opponent.

Other categories in which bamboo wins out, according to bamboo products brand Boonboo, are in its flexibility and sheer durability.

"One of the strongest natural materials on Earth," bamboo is sturdy enough to stand up to steel, brick, and concrete. Plus, the seepage of fossil fuel chemicals that you get with plastic becomes non-existent when using bamboo.

Reusable bamboo food packaging

Top that all off with bamboo's ability to grow wildly fast, sprouting up to 3 feet per day and ready to harvest in as little as one to five years (via Eco & Beyond), and it's as renewable as it gets.

There are also much cleaner, greener processes involved when creating reusable bamboo food packaging as opposed to plastic.

According to Good Start Packaging, disposable utensils made from this super plant are created using the plant's sheath, while reusable utensils are made by turning the whole plant into a powder and then shaping it.

These products can be used more than once, but they also won't take centuries to decompose if you throw them away, like plastic does.

It's clear that this incredible plant has a wide range of potential uses, making it one of the most versatile and eco-friendly materials out there, especially when used around food.

World Bamboo Day 2023 Theme: Celebrating the Sustainable Future of Bambo

Bamboo, often referred to as "the plant of a thousand uses," has long held a special place in the hearts and cultures of many communities around the world. Its versatility, strength, and rapid growth make it a remarkable natural resource with countless applications.

World Bamboo Day, celebrated annually on the 18th of September, is a global event dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of conserving bamboo plants and promoting the bamboo industry. While the theme for World Bamboo Day 2023 has not been officially announced, let's take a look back at the previous year's theme and explore the significance of this remarkable day.

World Bamboo Day 2022

World Bamboo Day: 'It is Time to Plant Bamboo

In 2022, the theme for World Bamboo Day was "It is Time to Plant Bamboo," and it encouraged individuals, communities, and organizations worldwide to embrace the cultivation and conservation of bamboo.

The hashtag #PlantBamboo served as a rallying cry for those passionate about the future of this remarkable plant. This theme highlighted the urgency of planting bamboo to counteract the declining bamboo populations in regions where they are native.

The Importance of Bamboo Plants

Bamboo has been an integral part of human civilization for centuries, used by indigenous communities for a wide range of purposes. From arts and crafts to building and construction materials, bamboo's uses are virtually limitless.

Today, bamboo serves as a vital raw material for producing products such as paper and furniture. Its elegant, evergreen foliage has also made it a popular choice for outdoor garden plants.

One of the most remarkable features of bamboo is its rapid growth and regenerative behavior. Bamboo stands out as one of the top oxygen-producing plants and air purifiers in the plant kingdom. This characteristic makes it an invaluable asset in combating environmental issues such as deforestation and air pollution.

The Challenges Facing Bamboo Plants

Despite its many benefits, bamboo faces several challenges, including the rapid growth in demand for bamboo products, urbanization, and deforestation in regions like Asia, Africa, and Oceania where bamboo is native.

These factors have contributed to the decline in bamboo populations, making conservation efforts more critical than ever.

The Aims of World Bamboo Day

World Bamboo Day serves several essential aims:

1. Raising Awareness: The day aims to increase global awareness of the potential of bamboo plants and their versatile applications.

2. Environmental Protection: It seeks to protect the natural environments in which bamboo thrives, promoting the conservation of these vital ecosystems.

3. Sustainable Use: World Bamboo Day encourages the sustainable use of bamboo resources to ensure that future generations can benefit from this incredible plant.

The Origin of World Bamboo Day

The roots of World Bamboo Day can be traced back to the World Bamboo Organization (WBO), which initiated the event in 2009. This decision was made during the 8th World Bamboo Congress held in Bangkok, where delegates from nearly 100 countries came together and agreed to celebrate the 18th of September each year as World Bamboo Day.

The WBO's vision for this special day is to elevate bamboo's potential to a global audience, protect natural resources, promote sustainability, foster new bamboo industries, and support traditional uses for community economic development.

In conclusion, World Bamboo Day is a day to celebrate the incredible bamboo plant and its role in sustainable living, environmental protection, and economic development. While the theme for World Bamboo Day 2023 remains a mystery for now, the legacy of past themes like "It is Time to Plant Bamboo" reminds us of the urgency to conserve and grow bamboo for a greener and more sustainable future. So, as we celebrate World Bamboo Day this year, remember to use the hashtag #GrowBamboo to join the global movement in support of this remarkable plant and its potential to change the world for the better.

World Bamboo Day Initiative

Here is what the WBO said about this special day

''World Bamboo Day is a day of celebration to increase the awareness of bamboo globally. Where bamboo grows naturally, bamboo has been a daily element, but its utilization has not always been sustainable due to exploitation. The World Bamboo Organization aims to bring the potential of bamboo to a more elevated exposure – to protect natural resources and the environment, to ensure sustainable utilization, to promote new cultivation of bamboo for new industries in regions around the world, as well as promote traditional uses locally for community economic development.'' [WBO website accessed 01/09/2022]

Bamboo baby plates with suction care

Bamboo baby plates are environmentally friendly and safe for babies.

The plates are predominantly made from bamboo plants and do not contain artificial chemicals as plastic products do.

The bamboo plates are durable, reusable and biodegradable

They are made from bamboo plants which are fast-growing and sustainable.

Let’s dive in and find out how to take care of them.

bamboo baby plates with suctions

Buy bamboo baby plates with suctions

The suctions are a great feature of the bamboo plates because the ‘cute little hands’ will not remove them from the table.

They are firm on flat surfaces and can withstand the forces exerted on them.

You can buy eco-friendly baby plates online or in-store.

Here are some UK-leading sustainable product shops. The plates are fitted with silicone suction rings. Perfect for babies.

How to wash bamboo baby plates?

Handwashing bamboo plates in warm soapy water is the best way to clean them.

Some parents tend to use vinegar or lemon instead of dishwashing liquid which is perfectly fine.

Before washing, remove the silicone ring suctions and soak all the parts in warm soapy (lemon or vinegar) water.

Wash and dry immediately as water will find its way through the bamboo fibres if left to soak for hours. This can cause cracks and splits.

Ensure that the storage area is dry and free of dust and dampness.
Some bamboo-based products are clearly indicated to be hand-wash only and not suitable for the dishwasher or microwave. Please read the item description prior to buying it.

Bamboo plates do not like hot water

The bamboo products are generally tough, but they will not last long if washed in hot water.

Hot water can cause the bamboo plates to expand, crack and eventually split, damaging the plates completely.

Therefore, it is better to always wash the plates in lukewarm water. (See below for more info on how to safely wash the plates)

Are baby bamboo plates dishwasher and microwave safe?

Generally, not all but some baby bamboo plates and other bamboo-based products can tolerate dishwasher and microwave temperatures up to 100 degrees Celsius.

Wash the baby bamboo plates and bamboo sets in warm soapy water, even though some bamboo-based products are dishwasher and microwave safe.

Also, please avoid putting the baby plates in boiling water, oven and microwave oven.

This will keep the plates in an immaculate condition and will also last longer.

How to clean bamboo baby plates?

Most bamboo baby plates are not dishwasher friendly. So wash immediately after use.

Here are the steps for cleaning the baby plates.
  • Remove the silicone suctions.
  • Soak in soapy warm water for 5 minutes (use lemon juice or vinegar).
  • Wash with the soft side of the sponge or cloth
  • Rinse in warm water.
  • Drain and dry immediately with a clean cloth.
  • Keep in dry and well-aerated storage.

Avoid cracks and splits in bamboo baby plates

Bamboo baby plates are durable, they can last for 2 years or more.

However, the common concerns of using bamboo products are the cracks and splits.
The use of silicone suctions stops bamboo plates from being knocked off the table.
Also, bamboo cracks and splits often happen when the bamboo products are washed with boiling hot water or soaked for too long.

So, taking care of bamboo products is to the parents and caregivers. The hints will help you to look after the bamboo baby products.

Reusable bamboo baby plates

The suctions are an incredible feature for securing the plates in place.

The plates should always be washed in warm soapy water.

They are durable natural products, long-lasting, sustainable and above all better for the environment.

One of the great features of the bamboo plates is the silicone suctions underneath, made to attach the plates securely onto flat surfaces.

In some plates and bowls, the suctions are also found on the sides to secure cups and water bottles.

Look out for this special suction when buying bamboo sets.

The bamboo plate’s suction is a great feature of the bamboo plate because it makes it harder for the ‘cute little hands’ to knock it off the table or high chair.
  • Environmentally friendly

Unlike plastic plates, bamboo plate sets are biodegradable and environmentally friendly.

These natural bamboo products will break down and turn into the soil in less than 5 years.
  • Sustainable product

Bamboo products come from Bamboo plants which are much more sustainable than plastic, including the other plant-based plates and bowls.

The bamboo plants are fast-growing, renewable, and environmentally friendly.

These plants are also known to absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide gas and produce more oxygen per square kilometre than the other plants.

Bamboo fence ideas and checks

The 7 DIY checks you should do before building a bamboo fence will help you build a stunning bamboo fence.

1) Dimensions of the bamboo fence

Find out both the width and the height of the bamboo screening product.

Some retailers either only state the width or the height of the bamboo panel.

Make sure that your know both the width and the height prior to buying the bamboo screen that can fit perfectly.

2) How is the bamboo delivered to you?

The bamboo fencing materials often gather dust and absorb moisture during storage.

Moulds and rust can form very quickly when the bamboo screening supplies are stored longer in cool dark places.

So always ensure that the products are delivered to you well packed and free of dust and moisture.

Alternatively, pay a visit to your nearest DIY shop and check out the materials before purchasing.

3) Is the bamboo fence treated?

The untreated bamboo fence panels will blacken when expose to the weather.

Also, the uncoated wires will also rust in time.
The best thing to do is to ensure that the bamboo screening panels are treated, and panel wires are coated to protect the bamboo rolls.
If treated well, these items can last up to 10 years, even longer.

It is up to the shops to ensure that the brand-new bamboo screens are treated.

But a clever customer should always ask about the quality of the bamboo screens before buying them.

4) Read the fencing instructions thoroughly

The bamboo fences are easy to put up but can be tricky to start with.

You do not want to put it up and realise later that the fence is not standing up properly.

Read the instruction carefully before setting the bamboo screening panel.

5) Build 6ft/2m bamboo fencing to withstand the wind

Many bamboo fences are lightweight. They will collapse in strong winds if they are not set up correctly or in a windy site. To avoid that, set up the bamboo screens using strong posts.

6) Protect against weather and elements

Tall bamboo fencing, especially those built out of bamboo rolls, panels and spits, are susceptible to damp and wet conditions.

The bamboo panels will eventually turn black or the wire rust when exposed to the elements.

If this happens, repaint the fence with wood paints or bamboo stain.

7) Use stable lost posts as a support system

Bamboo rolls, panels and splits will require a firm support system.

For a new standalone privacy screen, use treated (round) log posts to provide support and additional strength.

The bamboo fences and rolls are beautiful products.

You can attach easily to existing fences, or use them as standalone fences with a few 2 x 1 round posts at intervals.

The bamboo fences range from 1 metre to 4 metres in length with variable heights.

The 2 m (6ft) bamboo fencing rolls are ideal for tall fences.

You may have to cut to fit sections of the fence.

Cut carefully so that you do not destroy the wire loop.

Also, painted the bamboo rolls with bamboo stains or fence paints.

As mentioned earlier, the bamboo screen can last up to 10 years, even more.

Many gardeners and homeowners prefer the 1.5 metres and 2 metres bamboo screening panels/rolls to the taller ones.

This is because they are well-spaced apart and provide great fence covers.

Here is a quick guide to building one.

Start Garden Plants from Seed in Bamboo Propagator

Make seed propagator with lids

Seeds tend to germinate well in conditions where the soil is moist and nutrient-rich and the soil temperature is above 10 degrees Celcius.

The Royal Horticultural  Society (RHS) has a detailed guide for sowing seeds here, RHS Germination Guide, PDF

The lids act as a greenhouse to maintain the temperature and humidity in the bamboo seed pots and trays. This encourages the seed to germinate.

You can take the lids off when the germinating seeds reach a certain height and transplant them.

Always put the lid back so that any seeds that remain will have to chance to grow.

Electric toothbrush heads made of bamboo

The interest in electric toothbrushes has been growing exponentially in the UK in the last 5 years.

Between 2017 and 2021, over 12 million adults used electric toothbrushes and replaced their heads 3 – 4 times a year. That's about 42 million toothbrush heads in 5 years.

There are concerns that this has done more harm to the environment than good to people’s oral health.

The good news is that new and eco-friendly options are available on the market in the last 2 years in the UK.

They are predominantly made from bamboo, which is known to be the fastest-growing plant, and sustainable.

Bamboo toothbrushes are also biodegradable. The toothbrushes' handles and replacement heads will break down and turn into the soil very quickly.
One point to note is that the bristles (brushes) are made of nylon, an eco-plastic product.

Recycle toothbrushes made of bamboo

Some reports indicated that replacing the plastic-made toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush has reduced the total amount of waste to about 30 percent.

In fact, bamboo toothbrushes are not only recyclable but also biodegradable and break down within 3 – 5 years.

When the nylon bristles wear out, cut them before binning them. The bamboo head can be placed in the garden bin they are natural wastes.

The development, manufacture and use of bamboo toothbrushes, including the latest electric toothbrush with heads, are promising trends as far as reduction of waste is concerned.

How often do you need to change your toothbrush head?

Generally, dentists recommend changing the toothbrush head anytime between 2 – 4 months.

There is no definite expiry or use-by date. The heads are expensive and therefore it is up to the users to decide when to replace them.
As a rule of thumb, if it does not need replacing, do not replace it. The head made of bamboo are likely to wear within the timeframe of 2 – 4 months.
A top tip is to always check the rim (the part that the main handle slips into fit). This joinery is susceptible to wear and tear (just like the plastic toothbrush) because of the vibrations.

Bamboo products are sustainable

Bamboos products are not only eco-friendly and durable, but they are also sustainable.

Many green companies in the UK are sourcing these products from communities and organisations that are working to protect the environment.

As a bamboo info-site, we know how fast bamboo grows.

It has the potential to be the go-to raw (eco-friendly and sustainable) material to replace the depleting trees and forests.

Two heads can last for 6 months or more. The bamboo toothbrushes with removable heads are fantastic products for replacing plastic heads.

A conventional toothbrush is unrecyclable because the plastics in them are difficult, if not impossible, to break down efficiently.

Since 2017, it is estimated that over 12 million people in the UK were using electric toothbrushes. Though they are recyclable, they are not environmentally friendly and are unsustainable.
